Music Monday - The Dirty Projectors

I've always been into music that's a little beyond everyday. When Chris and I got together, he really opened up a whole new world of music to me that I'd never experienced before. He's been a musician for more than half his life, and it's such a huge part of who he is. He listens to a lot of super obscure stuff that most people would probably not even consider music- very experimental stuff that have distinct categories (shoegazey, post rock, mathy... for real!). We often disagree on music, because I like pretty and pleasing sounds and melodies and stuff I can sing along to, and I feel like a lot of what he listens to is just too much for me. But one thing we do agree on is that this band is amazing.

I got The Dirty Projectors last album Bitte Orca from eMusic when I still had a subscription. Mostly what I would do there is browse the best sellers and staff picks and see if I liked anything. I instantly wanted this album, I knew it was right up my alley. Right when I got it I listened to the whole thing through and really enjoyed it. I rarely love an entire album, but I love this one. After a few listens I eventually got distracted by something else, but now (about six months later) I've become completely obsessed again. This is all I've listened to for the last few weeks. It's quickly becoming one of my favorite albums of all time. I can get enough of it!

I know the music won't be for everyone. It's pretty experimental. The awesome thing is that it's unlike anything I've ever heard (I'm sure someone else can draw a parallel between this band and someone else, but I can't!). I love that it's so out there, but my favorite part is that the female vocals (Amber Coffman, Angel Deradoorian, and Haley Dekle) are pretty. These girls are fantastic singers, and it's pretty rare in an age of lo-fi, underproduced music and singers who's thing is that they can't sing. They completely back up frontman Dave Longstreth on some tracks, but on others, like my favorite song "Stillness is the Move" they completely shine on their own.

(Solange Knowles covered this song, which is pretty surprising, check it out here)

I don't have their other six albums, but I am definitely going to track them down! If you are interested, you can visit their website here and download a free digital 7' with two awesome tracks.

Let me know what you think! If you listen to these tracks and love them or hate them or have something to say feel free to share with me, I'd love to hear what you have to say!

  1. I LOVE the Dirty Projectors! My favorites from that album are Two Doves, Useful Chamber, and Remade Horizon. I also really like their interpretation of Rise Above from the Black Flag album.

  2. They just played in Chicago on Friday and I got to see it! The live show completely blew my mind.

  3. I love-love-love them!

And! They have llamas in that video, which is just extra awesome! :)
