Kaelah and Mike's Engagement... My Side

I'm sure you've all heard about how Mike proposed to Kaelah when we were on vacation in Wilmington. They've each written up a post on Kaelah's blog describing the experience from their perspectives, which you can read here and here. I thought it'd be fun to tell you guys the story from my perspective! We were so thrilled to be there for our friends during such an important even in their lives, and we were touched that we were able to witness it.

We drove to Wilmington on Thursday, and we were stopped at a rest area when we first learned about Mike's plan. I'm pretty sure this was the bathroom break we took once we figured out Mike had driven in the wrong direction for quite a while, but I could be wrong! We all used the facilities, and the boys were done first. I went out to meet them so we could wait for Kaelah. Mike started asking me questions about what kind of cameras I had with me on the trip. I didn't think anything of it because we talk about photography a lot (he's my go-to guy whenever I have a question!). I told him what I had, and that's when he told us. I think he told me I should keep my cameras ready so we could capture a big event. I asked what kind of event, and he said "The kind where I ask Kaelah to marry me". I pulled a total Elaine Benes and pushed him... "Whaaaat?!?!" We all started laughing in shock! I think I asked if he had a ring already and he said yes, and I asked if he knew how yet but he wasn't sure. We all saw Kaelah walking up to us so we quickly shut up and acted like nothing was happening. We got back in the car and kept driving.

I have to admit, I was a little nervous I'd spill the beans. I was so excited for them and I knew how much Kaelah was looking forward to getting engaged, but I'm proud to say I kept it mum the entire time!! (Except I told my cousin, shhhh!). Whenever we had a second without Kaelah standing next to us I'd ask Mike when he was gonna do it. I was so impatient!!!! We visited Kure Beach and I asked Mike if he'd do it there. He said absolutely not, haha! The beach was too cheesy for him, and I saw where he was coming from. He told me about some ideas he had of planning things out beforehand and having Kaelah stumble across them, but I told him that for me, it'd be much more special if things were spontaneous and heartfelt. I suggested to him that maybe he should just speak to her from his heart whenever the moment felt right, and he said "I've got a fountain of things to say!". So cute! We didn't talk much about it over the next couple days because I knew I needed to back off and let Mike figure it out. I'm like that, I get so excited for other people I don't let them enjoy their moment, so I tried really hard to not do that (sorry if I did, Mike!). I kept my camera bag with me wherever we went, but the right moment hadn't come yet. Our last night in Wilmington we ended up at a quiet little bar called The Opera Room. We'd been there the night before and liked it a lot, it was a good place for conversation over a few drinks. We sat at the bar, with Kaelah and I next to each other and the boys next to her. Kaelah and I talked for most of the night, and I personally think we had a really awesome conversation. We left in good spirits, and headed off for their car (don't worry, Mike was the designated driver that night!!). Chris and I walked ahead of Kaelah and Mike, she was in heels and was going a little slower than us, so we ended up quite a bit ahead of them at one point. We came upon the little area by the water with all the blooming trees draped in white lights, and we sat on a bench to wait for them to catch up. Our back was to them. At one point I could hear them talking, so I knew they were close, but my back was still facing them. Chris turned around and nudged me. "He's doing it! He's doing it! Get the camera!". I quickly dug out my little point and shoot from my purse and Chris snatched my iPhone, and we started snapping pictures. On one hand I felt kind of guilty for clicking away while they were sharing this intensely personal moment, but Mike had assured me that he wanted us to capture the moment, so I kept on taking pictures. I didn't hear much of what Mike said to Kaelah, because she was so shocked that she was shouting "Really?! REALLY?! Nooo, really?!". I definitely had tears in my eyes, but also a huge smile on my face! A few people were walking down the street while Mike was down on one knee, and one of the girls yelled out "Awwww", then Mike stood up and they hugged (obviously a yes), and the random girls started clapping and yelling. It was truly a sweet moment.

Chris and I really want to thank Kaelah and Mike for allowing us to be a part of this huge event (well, mostly Mike because Kaelah had no clue it was going to happen!). When I think about it, our friendship is really a crazy thing. Who would have thought that a few emails back and forth between two girls who like the internet a whole lot would turn into a friendship like this within a matter of months?? It was such a cool thing for Chris and I to be involved, and to be asked to participate in a small way so that they could have that moment forever... GAH! So awesome.

So thanks, you two, we love you guys and are so unbelievably happy for you!!! Now we just need to work on getting Chris to propose ;)
