Confessions of a Thrift Store Junkie.

Vintage Jacket
It's no secret that I love to go thrifting. I'm not as serious about it as some people I know, but over the last year it's become one of my favorite things to do. I love the thrill of finding something fantastic, and knowing that I got it for a fraction of what I'd spend on something new. But one thing that I've noticed is that I'm sort of competitive with thrifting. Not that I have a specific person I'm competing against, but if I find something awesome I have to have it. Even if it doesn't fit, even if I'll probably never wear it.

I've been collecting these vintage pieces that I know I have no use for. I honestly sound like a hoarder when I say that! It's not like I have bags and boxes full of vintage stuff I don't need, but a handful of things that I buy even though I know I don't need it. This jacket is the latest purchase that I probably should have skipped over. It's so perfectly 70s, red and white polka dot polyester with huge lapels, but it's way too small for me. I can get it on and button it, but it just looks silly. I knew it was too small when I tried it on, but I bought it anyway. Part of me justifies that maybe one day I'll sell some of my vintage stuff, and part of me says that maybe someday it'll fit/I'll have a use for it. But these are tendencies I'm going to really try to nip in the bud! I'd love to have a huge vintage collection someday, but what good is it to me if it doesn't fit?

Do you have any bad shopping habits you'd like to confess to? I'm sure we all have little things we do that we aren't especially proud of. Feel free to share in the comments!

  2. I do that too! I've bought so many awesome vintage pieces that are too small I just couldn't not buy it. So I'm going to open an Etsy shop so I don't end up on Hoarders. That jacket is cute though so I can see what ya mean :)

  4. I do that, too. But as far as that jacket goes, it looks cute! I think a bigger one might look frumpy. :)

  5. Oh goodness, I do that too, but with shoes. If I find an amazing pair of shoes thrifting in great condition, size doesn't matter, they're mine. lol. But let us know if you do ever sell that jacket, I. am. in. love with it!

  8. Aww I think the jacket looks cute on you! Of course I know fit is different when you are actually wearing it but I can see why you had a hard time passing it up, it is one fabulous jacket!

I love the boots as well.

Shopping confession? I think my main confession would be I will literally pass up eating to buy something I want. I use to buy things that didn't fit (too big or too small) sometimes too but I've tried not to as I get older.

  11. I think you look absolutely gorgeous in that!

As for me, I am horrible with... sizing. When I am in the store, the idea of trying clothing on doesn't appeal to me one bit. I love buying new stuff, but I hate the process of spending time in the store! So, I normally end up with clothing that doesn't fit. Either I'll get a junior's instead of a woman's, or I'll just get the totally wrong size. /facepalm

    I HATE IT! >.<

  12. That is what I do!Today, I bought a dress that is too big on me, because it was too cute to pass up. Now I am trying to find a way to alter it. The only problem is, it has pockets and I have never taken in anything with pockets before. Ugh.

  14. Haha I get that :) If you can't wear it, no one can! Um, I love love everything about you in this post! Where'd you get your boots and jeans? So nice. I hate jean shopping.

  15. @Jen B: thank you! My jeans are actually jeggings from Target (last year, but they still carry them), and the boots are also Target from a week or so ago :)

  16. Pretty jacket. Too bad it doesn't fit well. Maybe you know someone who you can give it to?

I have a bad shopping habit too: I buy too many basic t-shirts (white, black, grey and blue). I don't need all of them, but I keep thinking: hm, might come in handy.
And it is always good to have basic t-shirts (there a lot of times when you can wear it, like in the summer and they keep you warm in the winter, underneath a jacket or a cardigan). But you can have too many of them ;)

  17. Your hair looks so great. Could you do a tutorial??

  18. I totally love that jacket -- it looks like you should have it on with jodhpurs and be going out to ride across the English countryside!

I have a gorgeous 1970s burnt-orange leather jacket that I LOVE. It's WAY too small for me but I had to have it and refuse to part with it. I know it's ridiculous but ... oh well.

  21. I agree with above commenters, I don't think I would have known that jacket was too small if you hadn't said anything. It's very flattering and makes you look really cute.

My bad shopping habit? I buy things without trying them on sometimes. I just assume they are okay because they are the same size as other stuff I've bought at that store. Baaaaad idea.

  22. okay, i'm really glad to know i'm not the only one with this problem! i have this section in my closet that's made up completely of thrifting impulse buys that i knew i shouldn't have gotten, but because i have no self control when i'm in a thrift store, i got anyway.
